The Dallas Mavericks have been trying to lure Luka Dončić over from the NBA’s marquee team, the LA Lakers. With some clever contract negotiations and savvy business moves by Dirk Nowitzki, this dream could become a reality! Rival fans will be watching closely as these two events unfold…

Another former NBA All-Star walked away from his team, putting his career in jeopardy. The Toronto Raptors announced on November 28 that point guard Goran Dragi will be departing the team for personal reasons. Dragi hasn’t seen much action since joining the Raptors in a sign-and-trade deal that sent club legend Kyle Lowry to the Miami Heat. The new move will fuel speculation that Dragi is on his way to the Dallas Mavericks to play with countryman Luka Doni.
Dragi, 35, does not suit the Raptors’ retooling schedule. Toronto won the NBA championship in 2019 but is rebuilding on the fly around 27-year-olds Pascal Siakam and Fred VanVleet. Scottie Barnes, a rookie, is averaging 35 minutes per game, while Gary Trent Jr., 23, and Precious Achiuwa, 22, are regular starters after being acquired from the Heat.
The marriage of Goran Dragi with the Dallas Mavericks makes sense.

Aside from the romanticism of Goran Dragi joining the Dallas Mavericks to play alongside young Slovenian phenom Doni, Dragi would provide Dallas with what it urgently needs.
Dragi is a legendary Slovenian basketball player. Dragi was the MVP of the national team’s first medal-winning squad in the country’s history, playing with 18-year-old Doni in the 2017 EuroBasket competition. Slovenia stunned the field by defeating Spain by 20 points in the semifinals before defeating Serbia for the gold.
Naturally, Dragi and Doni would be a good match in the Big D. However, bringing in the Raptors’ veteran point guard may be more than a happy ending for Slovenia. It might also make a difference in Dallas.
The Dallas Mavericks are in desperate need of a playmaker.

Doni is the heart and soul of the Dallas Mavericks. He is the team’s leading scorer, assistr, and rebounder. The Mavericks are 10–8, although they have lost all three games Doni has missed due to an ankle ailment. Jalen Brunson averaged 5.3 dimes per game, compared to Doni’s 8.1. No one else on the team had a higher average than 2.5.
But here’s when the stats start to get weird. With Doni on the court, Dallas is outscored by 8.5 points per 100 possessions. When he’s not around, they’re a plus-8.9. Part of the reason is because, strangely enough, the ball travels better without Luka. With Doni on the floor, Dallas had a 56.2 percent assist rate in 530 minutes. When he’s not working, that number jumps to 61.9 percent.
You’ve forgotten about human nature if something appears counter-intuitive. When Doni is on the floor, the offense revolves around him. He makes the passes, scores the points, and sets up the shooters, among other things. Players return to playing basketball by feel when he’s not there. If a man is available, pass it on. Don’t make everything go through Doni right now since he’s not out here.
Doni is a ball-controlling player. Coach Jason Kidd had a similar look, albeit he wasn’t as as good a scorer as Doni.
Goran Dragi, a seasoned professional, can assist Dallas in resolving this issue. Dragi has a lot of experience as a playmaker. When he’s on the court with Doni, he lets him go around without the ball, do some screening, and basically get the ball flowing more easily than if Luka has to run the whole show.
When Dragi fills in for Doni in non-Doni minutes, Dallas has a real point guard to keep the attack in rhythm. Brunson’s playmaking skill is undeniable. Dragi’s possession of the ball, on the other hand, elevates Brunson’s threat level.
Goran Dragi’s escape from Toronto is hindered by statistics.
Goran Dragi is trapped with the Raptors because of money. Toronto is pleased to pay him to stay away from the club, despite the fact that their statement announcing the deal was nothing but favorable. This season, he has a cap number of $19.4 million, and Toronto has minimal wriggle space, with just over $250,000 separating them from the luxury tax apron. The Raptors’ ability to make roster changes without incurring the tax is limited if Dragic’s contract is waived.
Although the Dallas Mavericks have above the salary ceiling, they still have $18.1 million left under the tax apron. Dallas could fit the remaining of Dragi’s contract onto their sheet and escape the tax since the season is almost a quarter through.
They can’t just deal Dragi for a top-55 protected second-round selection. Because the Mavericks are above the salary ceiling, a deal with the Raptors would necessitate sending $14.6 million back to the Raptors.
A more probable possibility is that Toronto and Dragi strike a deal to buy out the balance of his contract, but that arrangement will be reached later. The Raptors’ cap issues become less severe as time passes.
In Goran Dragi, Doni and the Dallas Mavericks should be able to add a second Slovenian to their squad. But that chance hasn’t arrived yet.
