Owner of the Washington Football Team, Dan Snyder, did not obstruct the investigation into his team last year, according to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, speaking from the league’s owners meetings in Irving, Texas.
Snyder sought to block attorney Beth Wilkinson from meeting a woman who had accused the owner of sexual misconduct in 2009, according to the Washington Post. The lady received a $1.6 million settlement in the end.
“We went through a long period of inquiry and deliberation,” Goodell said. “The one thing I can say with absolute certainty is that it did not interfere with our investigator’s job.” We were able to contact all of the individuals she wanted to contact and have many interactions with them. With attorneys and legal companies in particular, there is always a tug of war.
“That’s something I believe we were able to overcome and ensure we arrived at the correct result.”
Members of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, who forced the NFL to reveal records connected to the probe, are now demanding further information about Snyder’s alleged efforts.
Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Illinois), a member of the committee, told ESPN that the allegations were “very alarming” and that the issue “continues to push us to investigate.” He said that they expect more from the NFL.
“They’ve been presenting records on a regular basis,” Krishnamoorthi, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, said. “But, based on what we discovered yesterday, we’ll need a lot more information from them…. I’d want to see them increase the number and kind of papers they produce.”
Wilkinson heard of the 2009 claim immediately after starting her probe into the business last year, according to the Post. Snyder’s lawyers reportedly sought to block Wilkinson from interviewing the former team employee, according to the Post.
According to the Washington Post, the team had struck an agreement with the lady who had threatened to sue the club’s owner. Snyder’s private jet was the scene of the alleged sexual misbehavior. According to a story in the New York Times last year, a copy of the deal did not contain the claims, and neither Snyder nor the club ever acknowledged to wrongdoing.

Snyder’s lawyers reportedly offered the lady extra money in exchange for her quiet, according to the publication. According to the article, the woman’s lawyer addressed a letter to Snyder’s attorneys regarding the effort to prevent Wilkinson from speaking to her, which was filed in federal court.
“The issue is why; why did they go to such lengths to quiet that witness, and what else did they do to put the inquiry on hold, and how did they do it?” Krishnamoorthi expressed his thoughts.
He also said he didn’t know whether the Post piece increased the likelihood of congressional hearings on the issue, as many employees had predicted.
The NFL’s degree of collaboration, Krishnamoorthi added, “depends on their level of cooperation.” “Here’s how I see the situation: This information will be revealed in some form or another. People are releasing these papers and material to the press… so it’s getting out there. The issue is whether they want to provide it themselves and explain what occurred, or will it come out in another manner.”
According to an NFL representative, “We continue to respond to the committee’s requests. We shall refrain from making any additional comments out of respect for the committee and its deliberations.”
