For the first time since September 2017, the Premier League’s top three teams all played at 3 p.m. UK time on a Saturday, resulting in a tense, action-packed afternoon with contrasting outcomes for the English top flight’s championship contenders.
Chelsea were the major winners, winning 3-0 against Newcastle to take a three-point lead in the table.
Liverpool are in second place after squandering a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Brighton, while Manchester City lost 2-0 at home to Crystal Palace with ten men.

The Blues scored three second-half goals to beat Newcastle at St James’ Park, with Reece James scoring twice and Jorginho converting a penalty.
Under manager Thomas Tuchel, they have won 14 Premier League away games while only losing once, and only Chelsea in 2004-05 have surrendered less goals after ten league games than they have so far this season.
Match of the Day quoted Tuchel as saying: “Don’t mix patience with dozing off. It was crucial to be patient, and it was also required when you are essentially the only team in charge of the game’s intensity and flow.”
“You see the amount of players Chelsea had missing today – [Romelu] Lukaku, [Timo] Werner, [Mason] Mount, [Christian] Pulisic, [Mateo] Kovacic – [it’s] astonishing,” Match of the Day analyst Alan Shearer remarked.

Chelsea had to wait, but their quality paid off in the end, scoring three goals in a 16-minute second-half run to put an end to Newcastle’s tenacious fight.
Tuchel will be pleased that his team is scoring from all areas, as England right wing-back James scored twice with well-struck strikes before Jorginho added a third penalty from the spot.
Chelsea’s tally of 26 Premier League goals is second only to Liverpool’s, but the Blues’ total of three goals surrendered is comfortably the best in the league.

“We had some great moments in the first half, showing how we can damage Brighton by playing some great passes down the middle and playing very wonderful football, but we were only up 2-0.”
“We were not good enough in the second half. I didn’t like any of the body language. It felt like, ‘Oh my God, this is so difficult.’ Yes, that was obvious prior to the game.”

Liverpool’s defence will be questioned, and deservedly so, after the Reds wasted a 2-0 lead against Brighton and were left fighting for a point.
Despite falling three points behind leaders Chelsea, they still have the third-best defensive record in the Premier League, and Klopp will not worry.
After a calf ailment, Thiago Alcantara is back in full training for the first time since September, while Fabinho is also on the mend.
Klopp will be hoping that his team’s clumsy performance in their first game back at Anfield in almost a month was just a hiccup.

Pep Guardiola on Palace’s defeat: ‘Many things went wrong.’
Manchester City, the defending champions, are five points behind the leaders after Pep Guardiola’s 10-man team lost 2-0 at home to Crystal Palace in his 200th Premier League match in charge.
Wilfried Zaha put Palace ahead after six minutes, and Conor Gallagher completed a surprise win with a late second after Aymeric Laporte was sent out for a harsh foul on Zaha in first-half injury time.
City has lost four of their last ten Premier League home games, equaling the number of losses they had suffered in their previous 55 games at Etihad Stadium. This was just their second loss in 51 Premier League games that started at 3 p.m. UK time on a Saturday, and both came against Palace at home.
According to Guardiola, who spoke to Match of the Day, “Several things went horribly wrong. We let up a goal right away. After a fantastic first half in which we didn’t surrender a single goal. The second half was challenging, but our fans cheered us on because we demonstrated that we wanted to score.”
“The response is that we have a game in a short amount of time and we are already thinking about it,” City defender Ruben Dias told Sky Sports. We dropped three crucial points today, but that’s football. We are not pleased, but we are hopeful.
“We weren’t at our best today, but the squad battled and gave it their all, and it wasn’t enough.”
Simon Stone of Sport provides an analysis.
This outcome is easy for Pep Guardiola to ignore – a questionable red card, a questionable offside, and a rare defensive blunder.
Even at this stage of the season, he will see that a five-point deficit and a developing goal difference disadvantage against Chelsea would be difficult to close.
City are two points ahead of where they were at this time last season, despite drawing their next two games. But Guardiola is well aware that if City loses any more games like today, the argument around the absence of a conventional number nine would resurface.
