Game 1 was won by Magic and the Lakers in Chicago. In Game 2, Jordan went off, and the Bulls breezed over taunting charges. Mike’s cold-blooded runner forced Game 3 into overtime, and Chicago went on to win the series against a weakened LA club. That contest was a watershed moment for the team.
In Game 4, the Bulls thrashed the Lakers. In Game 5, with LA’s season on the line, Magic battled back with a triple-double. Jordan, on the other hand, led Chicago to its first title with 30 points and 10 assists.
Magic’s last opportunity at an NBA title turned out to be those Finals. It was also Jordan’s only genuine dance with Johnson on the biggest stage following Magic’s retirement, which he despised.
Jordan felt “duped” by Johnson’s forced retirement.

On Nov. 7, 1991, Magic startled the world by declaring that he had acquired HIV and would have to quit the game immediately. Johnson’s statement was met with grief and surprise, as well as some hostility, which showed again when he tried a return in the autumn of 1992.

Mike said that he wanted to provide Johnson the love and support he deserved at this difficult period, but admitted that he felt lost trying to follow in Magic’s footsteps.
Jordan went on to become probably the best player in NBA history, as it turned out. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Johnson and Bird had no option but to deliver him the torch, which he took and fled with.
Jordan was able to prove his superiority without having to defeat Magic once again.
To establish his value, His Airness never had to compete with Magic or Bird. He accomplished this by stopping a slew of All-Stars and Hall of Famers from winning NBA titles.
Jordan and the Bulls won six championships in the 1990s. In many respects, he surpassed Magic’s stratospheric stature as an athletic and cultural icon by becoming the sport’s ultimate champion and one of the generation’s pivotal athletes.
However, it wouldn’t surprise me if Mike still feels stymied in the present tense by his inability to compete as fiercely as he wanted versus Johnson.
